Tales from the Teacher of the Year

As you may know, Duncanville High School teacher David Williams was recently named the Region 10 Secondary District Teacher of the Year for 2010. Red and Blue - Is It In You?

This monthly column was started during the 2009-10 school year to recognize those who help make our district great. This year we want to continue to feature Duncanville ISD do-gooders, and will start things off in September by recognizing community members and organizations.

Although these silent partners in education aren’t making waves in the media, they register high in the hearts of our students. The Duncanville Church of Christ GracePlace has been donating school supplies to Duncanville ISD elementary schools since 2000. “We noticed the need while visiting with some of the school counselors,” explained Care Ministry leader Jeff Conrad. “That year we adopted three schools, and added two more each year until we had them all."

Duncanville’s Urban Legend

American Idol finalist Tim Urban returns home to deliver a special performance to fans

As the Friday night lights warm up, the city of Duncanville, along with the Duncanville Independent School District and the Duncanville Chamber of Commerce, is preparing for the ultimate in football season openers. American Idol Season 9 Top 7 finalist Tim Urban is returning home to help kick off district play for Duncanville High School. He will sing the national anthem and deliver a short home side halftime show as part of the Duncanville’s Urban Legend: Tim Urban event at the Friday, September 3 game, featuring the DHS Panthers and the Garland HS Owls at Panther Stadium.

Tim Urban recently completed a nationwide tour as part of the American Idols LIVE! Tour 2010, and says he looks forward to returning to his hometown of Duncanville. “I am deeply honored that the city I grew up in and have so many amazing memories from wants to honor me.”  Before the kickoff on September 3, Duncanville Mayor David Green will issue a proclamation for “Tim Urban Day”.  “We’re excited to have him back home,” said Mayor Green. “We want to celebrate Tim’s success and let him know that our city stands behind him in all of his future endeavors.”

But Urban won’t be the only attraction at the Duncanville High School season opener. The nationally-recognized DHS Marching Band and High Hats will also deliver a special halftime performance. Pre-game festivities include the recognition of Duncanville ISD middle school football players, a DHS choir performance, and an invitation-only Tailgate with Tim party. The city of Duncanville and the Duncanville Independent School District are holding contests for tickets to the tailgate party. Please stay tuned to both websites for more information.

Tim Urban will also be available to sign autographs at the stadium immediately following his halftime performance. Tickets are on sale online and at Panther Stadium in advance, and at the gate on game night.  Kickoff is at 7:30 pm. Panther Stadium is located at 900 W. Camp Wisdom Rd., Duncanville  75116.
