I Live, I Play, I Am - Duncanville

Nutrition News

Duncanville ISD finished up its Summer Meal Program at the beginning of August. The district served more than 700 breakfasts and lunches daily to children aged 18 and younger at three district school locations. With more than 28,000 meals served overall, Nutrition Services Director Donna Thomas considers the program a success. She also says that five years into its existence, the program is as important as ever. "The purpose is to continuously provide students with nutritious meals. They need to be properly nourished to ensure that when school resumes they are ready to learn. Each year, I observe an increase in participation."

Students at Central and Bilhartz elementaries will see additional breakfast items offered this year. Those campuses are piloting a different type of Breakfast in the Classroom program that features hot food items like pancakes on a stick. "We changed the name to Express Breakfast," said Thomas. "Students now go through cafeteria lines to pick up their pre-packaged breakfasts before going to the classroom." Hot food items will be offered three days a week, and other campuses may soon follow suit. According to Thomas, "Acton has already requested to start in September. And if any other school is interested in providing hot breakfast items, we will accommodate them as well."
