Critter Cam

Smith Elementary received a visit from Zooniversity on January 21. Students learned about animals from around the country, and were even able to pet creatures like chinchillas, foxes, and prairie dogs. We caught some of the critters on camera. View our gallery below!

Space - The Final Frontier

NASA’s Johnson Space Center is “the final frontier” for Duncanville High School juniors David Trombley and Darneil White. They are now Texas Aerospace Scholars, two of only 832 high school students to be accepted into the program. Trombley and White submitted original essays to state legislators explaining why they were good candidates, and were notified that they had been nominated in December. “When I saw the email, I flipped out. I was really, really excited,” said White.

The High School Aerospace Scholars program is an online learning experience. It consists of ten assignments and a final project, requiring students to complete readings, essays, mathematics and physics problems, drawings, and quizzes. At the end of April, 300 of the program’s top scholars will be invited to attend a six-day summer internship at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. There students will get the opportunity to design a manned mission to Mars, tour the facilities, and be mentored by NASA engineers.

Trombley and White hope to be two of Houston’s chosen crew. They believe the experience could be a launching pad for their dreams. Trombley wants to “design the spacecraft of tomorrow,” while White says he’ll settle for any job in the aerospace engineering field. The boys both credit their parents for the inspiration to explore other galaxies. “It’s a hobby for me and my dad. He really likes NASA,” said Trombley. “Both of my parents are engineers, so I’ve always been interested in the field. My focus has just changed from trains to planes to shuttles,” commented White.

And if the boys don’t land at the Johnson Space Center, they say they’re just grateful for the chance to learn more about something they love. “I’m learning lots of interesting things. It’s fun and useful,” explained Trombley. “It’s such a great experience. I’m just in it for the love and passion to achieve a dream,” said White.

Congratulations to these Duncanville High School scholars!
