Duncanville Band Program
The Duncanville Independent School District is proud to offer one of the most progressive band programs in the United States. The Duncanville High School Marching Band was awarded the Sudler Shield in 1997 as one of the outstanding marching bands in the U.S. Only 14 bands have ever been so honored. The John Philip Sousa Foundation has also honored the program with the coveted Sudler Flag of Honor recognizing Duncanville as a National Exemplary Band Program. Only seven band programs worldwide hold both of the Sudler Awards. The Duncanville High School Band is Texas' only Class AAAAA program to have earned all three of the Texas State Championships. Band is offered from grades 6-12 in the Duncanville ISD. More information can be found by calling the main Band Office at 972-708-3732 or by accessing our website: www.duncanville.k12.tx.us/band
Duncanville Choral Department
The
Duncanville Choral Department from Duncanville, Texas, has a long history of
being one of the finest choral programs in the State of Texas. Choral classes
expand artistic technique and vocal excellence in areas such as range and
flexibility, breathing, tone and diction. Students will gain an understanding of
complex rhythms, incorporate strong sight-singing skills and build competitive
and effective performing and interpretative skills.
The 2006-07 and the 2007-08 DHS A Cappella Choirs earned Sweepstakes at UIL
which designates the highest Superior ratings in performance and in
sight-reading. The 2007 A Cappella Choir also participated in DC Festivals
competition in DFW where they rated Superior in performance, Best in Class, and
Overall Outstanding Performance
The Duncanville High School A Cappella Choir carries rich tradition wherever
they travel. In the spring of 2007 the A Cappella Choir as well as the
“Swingers” Show Choir traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii and performed a “Remember the
Heroes” Concert at Pearl Harbor. In the spring of 2008, the choir traveled to
and competed in Toronto, Canada, where they achieved every top choral award, and
won the overall best performance of any group.

Theatre
The Duncanville High School Theatre Department is charged with providing students with a solid background in Drama. Courses range from the introductory Theatre I exploratory to the Spoken Wordclass, which requires that the student take part in “on stage” productions as well as participate in speech and drama competitions designed to enhance acting abilities and stage presence. Students are also encouraged to take Theatre I performance, Theatre II performance, and 3/4 theatre performance, as well as Technical Theatre which trains the student in set and lighting design and construction.
During the year the DHS Theatre Department produces four shows and aids the DHS Choir Department in producing their musical. Every student enrolled in a performance class is expected to audition for each production. Whether their interests are acting or technical work, all students are required to give of their time to make each show a success.
Duncanville has been blessed with many talented students, with great success “on the boards” and at speech and drama tournaments. If you want your child to develop confidence, self-discipline, compete at national drama contests, then take a long look at the theatre department at DHS.
Speech and Debate Program
The competitive speech and debate program at Duncanville High School is open to students in grades nine through twelve who are interested in tournament participation. Students compete in a variety of speaking events including debate, extemporaneous speaking, original oratory, interpretation of literature, and acting events. Competitors travel to approximately 10 tournaments during the school year. Previous out of state trips include the Glenbrooks tournament in Chicago and the Harvard invitational in Boston. Duncanville students have been successful throughout Texas, on the state level, and in national competition. It is a source of pride for all speech and debate participants that they have helped to make Duncanville known as the City of Champions.
For more information regarding speech competition or judging at the City of Champions Invitational Tournament in February, contact Barbara Garner at 972-708-3923 or e-mail: bgarner@duncanville.k12.tx.us .
