Two-a-days aren’t just for football. Some of the swimmers swim an hour and a half in the mornings and two hours in the afternoon if they swim club, and that was before the district. Now the team is going to regionals in two weeks after an outstanding performance against the other schools at the meet Friday night.

“I think it’s the best that I have done,” junior Shannon Samples said. “Though I did put all my effort into, I saw good results out of it.”

South Grand Prairie ended up on top at the district meet, followed by Cedar Hill and then Duncanville. But these results were only to find out who was qualifying to regionals, they have nothing to do with how the results for regionals will be.

“I’m excited and i’m getting pumped up the next two weeks,” freshman Catherine Bartosh said. “I’ve been doing a lot of sprinting things to get my heart rate up and I’ve been doing a lot of resting so at regionals I will just explode like a bomb.”

This is year is the second year in a row our swim team ends up on top at district and makes it to regionals. The only big difference, a whole new team of swimmers.

“This group of swimmers is in a better place than our swimmers were in the 08-09 season. Their work ethics is sound, their skills are higher, and their belief in their own self worth is stronger,” coach Margaret Thomas said.

The district meet was a big deal, but the regional meet will be even bigger. The swim team works as hard and long as any other team on campus, so for them to qualify for regionals and represent our school is awesome.

On the exact day last year, there were only six signing and the year before only one athlete signed. It was an intense rematch as the crowd on both sides of the Sandra Meadows arena roared back and forth. The crowd went wild when 6-6 free throw shooter Loren McDaniel for the Jaguars went to the line forcing her first missed free throw with 2.49 seconds left in regulation.

"I was so proud of our fans that came out and supported our team," head coach Cathy Self-Morgan said. "I was especially thankful for those students who yelled loud and kept McDaniel from hitting that free throw."

After McDaniel's missed shot the Pantherettes shut the Jaguars down in overtime taking their second win against the Defending 5-A State Champions 59-45. After the first period, the game was already neck and neck being tied at 13. Varsity head coach Cathy Self-Morgan pushed throughout the night to execute strongly on defense. At halftime the Pantherettes led 27-21. Going into the locker room Self-Morgan spoke to the team about unforced turnovers and to relax and not get frustrated on the court.

As athletes, students are viewed as leaders and scholars to the younger athletes in their program. But this year's Panther Ambassador program took it to another level. Students chosen are expected to be role models to the younger generation in Duncanville. As part of promoting this they read to the kids at Fairmeadows Elementary School.

“I felt like a big person. Not physically but emotionally,” senior Analuisa Salcedo said. “Not a lot of people tend to think about reading to little kids.”
